F&SF Magazine... again :) [Jun. 27th, 2011|10:58 pm]
At the end of last year, I won a competition in Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine for Best Pickup Line ("Is your name Cthulhu? Because your looks are driving me insane!").

Lightning's struck twice, this time for their competition to create a F/SF "Reality Show."
My winning entry can be found here:
http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/2011/competition1105.htm

The best part is that Gordon Van Gelder actually remembered me from last time. :)

I had submitted other entries as well, and thought I'd share:

EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOMEWORLD EDITION
The human race gets a free off-world vacation while Martians, Triffids, the Fithp, the Daleks, et al compete to remake the earth. The terrans will hardly recognize their xenoformed planet when they are finally allowed to return (to their option of slave pens, breeding camps, or livestock cages).

LAST ZOMBIE STANDING
It's head-to-head undead! Zombie teams must survive grueling tests like the Relay Race shootout, a booby-trapped Mall, and the ominously titled "Sarah Palin Challenge". First season will showcase the slow zombies of Team Romero, quick zombies of Team 28 Days Later, and dancing zombies of Team Thriller.

THE ETHEREAL LIFE
Featuring the world’s first intangible cast. Sequestered in a haunted mansion, contestants must confront prejudice, romance, exorcisms, and each other. Cast includes Casper, Drop Dead Fred, the couple from Beetlejuice, Kitty Pride, the ghost of Christmas Future, Slimer, and the creepy girl from The Ring. The competition can’t touch this!

BIG BROTHER - GORMENGHAST
Twelve strangers. A hundred cameras. One freaky castle. The Lords of Groan open their home--from the Hall of Spiders to the wine cellar labyrinth--for the hit voyeuristic series. This season has it all: infighting, jealousy, evisceration by death owls. Watch housemates backstab each other, literally, just to be evicted!

MITHRIL CHEF
Middle-earth's finest cooks must improvise multi-course meals using secret ingredients like Farmer Maggot's mushrooms, Ent-draughts, and Balrog. Winners are determined by enthusiastic Hobbit judges. Highlights this season include the perfect Lembas bread pudding and a tiered birthday cake replica of Minas Tirith (topped with an immolated Denethor candle)!

Marriage Equality... [Jun. 25th, 2011|12:57 am]
[Current Mood |jubilantjubilant]

...is now a reality in NY. :)

32 Votes were needed, and we received 33. Very close, obviously, but given that the Senate was Republican-controlled, I'd say not too shabby. :)

After a week's tense vigilance and enduring much stupidity on the "Politics on the Hudson" blogs, tonight's outcome feels AMAZING! :D

Marriage Equality NY [Jun. 15th, 2011|08:15 pm]
I received this today and wanted to share, in case anyone here is from District 40 (covering Northern Westchester County, all of Putnam, and Eastern Dutchess):

"We are so close! Marriage Equality could be a reality after this week, but only if we act now! This is the final push and we have to pull out all the stops.

Yesterday not only was an official bill released by Governor Cuomo but two other Republican Senators, Alesi and McDonald, have indicated their support for marriage equality. This puts the total of Senators supporting Marriage at 31, we need 32 for passage!

However, our Lower Hudson Valley state senator Greg Ball is STILL undecided. He is still listening to his constituents and we need to be heard! Please forward this email to anyone you know in the District 40 (covering Northern Westchester, all of Putnam, and Eastern Dutchess) and ask them to take one second to call Senator Greg Ball and tell him to vote YES on marriage equality. It is impossible to overstate how crucial the next few days are and while we are close, we are not there yet!

You can call Senator Ball's Albany office at 518-455-3111. If that voicemail box is full, please call the Brewster office at (845) 279-3773.

When you or anyone else calls, please remember to give your full name, full address, and that you want Senator Ball to vote YES on marriage equality."

Huzzah, I'm in Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine!! [Oct. 12th, 2010|06:08 pm]
[Current Mood |bouncybouncy]

Not a story, alas, but still buncha awesome!

I came home a few minutes ago to find a media mail package for me. I first thought it might be a contributor copy, or perhaps a random gift from a friend, but it turns out I won first prize for F&SF's last contest.

The contest was to write Pick-Up Lines suitable for sf/f worlds. I'd submitted six entries, and surprisingly, they picked one that wasn't even near the top of my favorites.

The ones they did not choose were:

-- If I could rearrange the Martian alphabet, I'd put gleb and ch’pla together.

-- By blessed fortune, your beauty I glimpsed,
Would humble fair Venus, be envied by nymphs.
What I’ll ask you next is easy to guess,
And I’ll be envied by gods, if you but say “yes.”

-- Charm, Truth, Beauty....wow, they named all the best quarks after you.

-- Did you know I have a crystal ball in my heart... and I keep seeing your future in it?

-- It takes a single photon only eight minutes to escape the sun, traverse the icy void of space, breach our atmosphere and find the most precious of flowers, Only eight minutes to meet the purpose of its existence. I’m jealous that it's taken me all these years just to do the same.

And the one they did pick?

"Is your name Cthulhu? Because your looks are driving me insane!"

:)

My prize was a copy of the issue, the boxed set of American Fantastic Tales edited by Peter Straub, and a letter of Congratulations signed by Gordon Van Gelder himself (which will be promptly framed until I get an actual story accepted by him).

Yay! :)

World Fantasy Con - October 28 [Aug. 25th, 2010|01:18 pm]
I'm considering going to WFC, especially since the theme this year is whimsical/humorous fantasy. Not too thrilled though about the long drive to Ohio and the expenses.

Anyone else planning to go?

Ganked from gabriel_writes...

I initially put in a few paragraphs and got a result of Mark Twain. When I put in a whole story, I found out that...
